So Unhappy With Whirlpool

I purchased the sidekick refrigerator and freezer approximately 3 years ago. Had problems with the freezer right at the one year mark, but Whirlpool let me go back and add the extended warranty. No problems since. But in 2019 I have had to replace the sealed cooling system, the thermostat and the computer that manages the temperature - for almost $1,000 in repairs. Now 3 months after the last repair it is no longer cooling again!!!!! I have lost hundreds of dollars in food on three different occasions because the refrigerator stops cooling. I currently have a whirlpool refrigerator, freezer, washer, and dryer, but at this point don't know that I will ever purchase another whirlpool product again! So unbelievably disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had this fridge for just about 5 days now. When I first moved all my food from the older model to the new model (same size) I was amazed that the same amount of food took up more space than before.
1) I have 2 fewer shelves on the door, previous version had 5 full length shelves current only has 3, (they are 6 half shelves, so you lose a few inches in the middle) the previous model bottom shelf on the door could hold a bunch of two litters and the top shelf was perfect for cans. The new model is missing both of these features.
2) the inside has 1 fewer shelves, previous had 5 shelves, current has 4 (because they converted one to drawers
3) number of drawers, previous had 2 full size (crisper) and 1 small, new one has 4 full size (crisper) that are bigger than the previous model. One smart thing in the previous model was that you could see through the glass between the bottom shelf and the drawers so you knew what was in there without having to open them. That is now gone, you cannot see the bottom two drawers at all unless you open and that just means whatever goes in there will be forgotten about quicker.
4) The bottom drawers are larger, so if you are throwing junk in there its fine, not great for people who like to be organized and see everything they have
5) the spacing between the shelves is no well done, for example a 20oz bottle can only fit on two shelves in the new model, but could fit on 4 shelves in the old model. The amount of space for the shelves has decreased.
6) the light and control panel is in the in the middle and to the front of the top of the inside of the fridge so you loos that space as well. This could have been put in a better place such as on the outside of the door, or make it smaller.
7) the shelves on the door bump into the shelves, so if you have items on the shelves you cannot put them near the edge or they will get pushed into the fridge, for example i keep a large water container with a spigot that in the old model could rest right on the edge, but in the new model sites 2 inches inside so you have to pull it out and push it back
8) the doors on the hinge side of the door cannot open unless the door is open about 125 degrees because the "pizza holder" sticks out. you may have to redo your build-in or pull the fridge out further to allow extra space for the door to open
9) what is the point of the "pizza holder" it is a waste of space, blocks the drawers from opening and the gap at the bottom of it makes it so it is a wast of space unless you have a box that you can rest on the side, but there are not many items that can do that. I tried a few items, but they would fall out of the bottom
10) The door itself is about 3 inches larger than older models so you need a bit extra room
11) the fridge makes a loud breathing noise, not all the time, but often, not sure what it is for (maybe when it is doing an air exchange), and it may be a defect, I will probably record it and call support to see if it is normal.
12) it is simple to set the temperature, as they have few buttons to push and one says perfect temp
Overall I'm disappointed in the product for the price paid when compared to other brands and even other Whirlpool products. They should quickly take this model to the drawing board.

Purchased this set in 2009 for new constructed home, Fridge lost coolant 2013 had it charged then a year later again. Unable to fix so had to order a new fridge 2015, they changed the design so had to buy the freezer so they would match. IN May 2018 the fridge lost coolant again and was able to fix, now 16 months later fridge is not working. Same issue. Planned the kitchen design around these appliances. So I have paid about 7000-8000 in the past 10 years. No More!

This is the second time in 6 months that we have had to repair our beautiful LOOKING fridge. I could not be more disappointed in the integrity of Whirlpool. We have purchased this brand name forever and have never had an issue like this before- and they will not support replacing a product of theirs that is clearly faulty. We have no idea where to turn with this gigantic hole in our kitchen. Thus is a 3 year old home!! I expected more from this company. I would not recommend at all, unfortunately. I am so disheartened to read the reviews here- same exact problem!!

I bought and finally paid it off after 4 years and now it's going to the curb after 3 failed attempts to repair it becuase of inaccessible freon leak. WHAT!! After 4 years???!!! No warranty, no recourse, nothing I can do but trash it. No assistance whatsoever from Whirlpool. I refuse to replace it with the same junky quality product from Whirlpool. Freezer will go into the basement. Read and heed the reviews, your unit will breakdown. Don't waste your hard earned money!

I normally would not post a negative review on a website, but I don't want someone else making the same mistake I did. I want to start off by saying the refrigerator looks amazing and we really like it when it works. The freezer has been amazing since we purchased it with no problems. They really do look great together and guest talk about how much they like them all of the time. However, it is the refrigerator and the customer service that we have not been thrilled with. We are currently waiting on our 4th factory replacement in less than 4 years. Bought first one in 2017, never worked and was immediately replaced. Second worked until October of 2018, repairman came out and tried to repair but after a couple failed attempts decided it needed replacing. Third refrigerator worked until September of 2019, September 8th to be exact. First repairman came out in about 4 days and ordered part. Part came in and he attempted repair one week later. Fridge cooled for about 30 minutes then we got the dreaded over temperature alarm. This repairman said he would recommend replacing fridge to whirlpool. Well, whirlpool wanted a second opinion. I guess because they don't trust the people they pay to repair their machines. Second repairman comes out and says the first guy didn't know what he was doing and he could fix it no problem all he had to do was order the correct parts. So he orders the parts and we wait another week for part to come in and repairman to come back and fix it. By the time he comes back we are sitting at 4 weeks without a fridge. And guess what, it doesn't work and he recommends ordering a replacement. Basically we wasted two weeks there, when the first guy recommended the same thing. When whirpool calls the following week, because evidently they can only come to my house on a Thursday or Friday, we are told it will be 14 business days before they can get the replacement to my house. We finally get email confirmation that they will be here on Nov 8th. So we have gone 2 months without this thing working. I completely understand things taking time, but when a customer spends the amount of money this fridge costs, plus pays for extended warranty and has gone through the problems that we have, you would think they could be a little inclined to expedite delivery or go out of their way to make this experience a little easier. I really don't understand why this process should take this long. I guess I should be thankful at least it is still under the extended warranty. Unlike some of the reviews that I have read. This experience has made me never want to purchase another Whirlpool product.

I am now on my second model of this frig. Our cabinets were built around this unit so I am stuck with something equivalent to this size. I discovered the death of the first frig when we returned from a trip to Disney.... lost everything!!! My current one started leaking out the front. Found the drain line was stopped up... fixed that. But now it fluctuates in temperature so much I am losing contents. I do not want to go back with the same brand. I know this is a whirlpool site but does anyone have a suggestion of a different brand? It is ridiculous to have to replace this unit every 4 years!!! Who can afford to do that?????

My husband and I purchased a large freezer and refrigerator less than 3 years ago on 12/17/2016. Unfortunately for us we did not read the reviews and went with what the appliance store told us. We happily had the fridge and freezer for a year and 5 months when the refrigerator stopped staying cold....we thought it was a fluke and whirlpool actually covered the parts and labor ($900) despite it being past the one year warranty. In September 2019...not even 6 months later the refrigerator got warm again....and it was then we read the reviews on this refrigerator....it won't last...compressor keeps failing. We are so sad we built our cabinets around this set and another set won't fit..but we are buying a different fridge...we lost $400 in food and MEDICATIONS last year and lost another $400 in food and MEDICATIONS again...we can't keep doing this.
I posted all one stars as the capacity and looks are GREAT...but if it doesn't FUNCTION it doesn't matter.

After 30 years of being a very happy Whirlpool customer, I recently had and issue with a refrigerator purchase and am now very unhappy with my Whirlpool refrigerator. After only two years of use, my SideKick refrigerator stopped cooling. I have been trying to get this refrigerator repaired since April 2019. I did not have an extended warranty and Whirlpool was gracious enough to cover the cost of this repair minus the $90 service call. This repair lasted about 3 months before the refrigerator stopped cooling again. During my 1st repair, I was offered the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty and purchased the extended warranty. The refrigerator stopped cooling again. I have been working on getting our refrigerator repair completed for about two months this time. I was finally put in a position that I could no longer go without a refrigerator and had to purchase a new refrigerator. I reluctantly purchased another sidekick with an extended warranty because it was the only refrigerator that would fit in the cabinet space in our kitchen. I now have a broken sidekick in my garage with an extended warranty and no resolution at this time. It has been a very lengthy and frustrating experience to say the least. The worst part of this whole experience is that I have a broken sidekick in my garage and do not have faith that the new refrigerator will last.

This unit has worked flawlessly since I purchased it almost 8 years ago. It's a shining example of what's possible given proper craftsmanship! Of course I'm joking. My husband and I bought a house 3 years ago. The house came with the Whirlpool SideKicks refrigerator/freezer pair. We did not buy any extended warranties because we had just bought a house and really couldn't afford it. Anyway, 3 years later, this past Memorial Day, the fridge stopped cooling. We lost a lot of money's worth of food because we had to throw it out. I called Whirlpool, and surprisingly, they were very helpful. They said they were willing to pay for parts if we would pay for service/labor. I agreed and thought it was very kind of them to do this because we didn't buy an extended warranty. Their willingness to do that is the only reason I'm giving this review 2-stars instead of 1. So a repairman came out and fixed the fridge. The compressor and the condenser went out and had to be replaced. 2 months after he fixed it, the fridge has stopped cooling again. Come to find out, it is leaking freon from the inside wall of the fridge, which is very rare but does happen. The repairman said it is not repairable and would have to be replaced. I called Whirlpool back and told them to look at the report from the repair company. They called back and said they were willing to replace it, but it was going to cost me $630.00 in fees! That would mean we would have spent almost $1,000.00 in our own money to replace the fridge! I can buy a new fridge for that! So I told them no way because even if we didn't buy an extended warranty, the product should NOT die in 3 years! Whirlpool should back their products better and their customers. I will not be buying another Whirlpool appliance after all of this. Not worth the trouble!

This fridge has been terrible, thank goodness my wife insisted on getting the extended service plan. The (1) repairman in my area has been here so many times he finally refused to come back. The unit had a history of freezing around the coils which ultimately resulted in overheating. The latest issue was not freezing coils but high temp. I cant get it below 58* which is a terrible temp to store goods ... should be @37*. AIG/Whirlpool has offered me a buyout of 75% total unit cost. The alternative being a refund of my service plan (pro-rated) and they wash their hands of me and their defective product. Now I get the pleasure of trying to match a new unit with the side by side companion freezer and kick in another 6 or 7 hundred bucks to make it happen. I was under the mistaken impression the extended warranty would cover parts and labor no matter what ... guess not. The one good review I can give is for sound .... that is the sound of the warning alarm that woke me up so many times in the middle of the night.

We bought the fridge/freezer combo through our homebuilder. The fridge stopped cooling after 2 years, causing the alarm in the fridge to go off repeatedly. We hired repairmen to look at the issue. They said the fridge is leaking freon and cannot locate where the leaking is taking place. Although they added more freon they warned us we may have to replace the fridge. We are very disappointed that we spent so much money on a fridge only to have it fail with only 2 years of gentle use. The freezer is fine. We have a Haier fridge that we've used for 20 years and has never broke down. The quality of this Sidekick fridge is subpar!

We bought the fridge/freezer combo through our home builder and the fridge stopped cooling after 2 years. We called several customer service and they said We should clean compressor, but we called repair company. Two repair guys said there is a leaking Freon in the cooling system and gave us two options. One is dilate it and add more Freon, but the leaking problem can not fix and come back again again. Second option is they recommend to buy a replacement because it would be costly to repair. the freezer works great, this combo looks nice, but the product should last longer than 2 years. We are very disappointed with this product. We have a small Haier fridge and have used more than 20 years, we have never had problem!!!!

I replaced an existing unit, same type, but no idea how old it was as it was in the house when we bought it. I wasn't sure I'd like the extra drawers on the bottom, but I really do. You lose some drawer shelves, but it's working. I feel actually like we have more space the way this is organized.

Acheté le 6 avril 2017, $ 1500,00 plus taxes , il a cessé de réfrigérer depuis avril 2019, cause: fuite de fréon, soit moins de 2 ans d'utilisation pour le prix, totalement décevant. J'avais eu un réfrigérateur similaire d'une autre marque auparavant, durée de vie 9 ans pour un montant de $800. Ça m'a coûté $300 pour remplir de fréon, $700 de perte de nourriture, je venais de faire les courses pour 14 jours de travail consécutifs. Le premier technicien me dit que ce type de problème est en principe garanti 5 ans. Appel au vendeur pour avoir suivi avec Whirlpool. Pas de suivi. Début juin, frigo cesse à nouveau de chauffer, encore perte de ma nourriture ( $600). Multiples démarches plus tard, on me dit qu'il n'y a aucune garantie après un an sur ce type d'appareil. Je suis la 49ème à faire une évaluation négative sur cet appareil, n'attendez pas d'être le 50 ème...

Only bought this unit because the original installed in Mar '15 completely quit after three years of service repairs and food spoilage. And since refrigerators are no longer standard industry sizes and we have the matching freezer unit built in, we didn't have another choice without major kitchen renovations. Somewhat disgusting that this unit which is currently being stored in our garage is going to end up in a landfill at four years old.

One repair person said he fixes these constantly and said there is probably a leak in the Freon line and recommended to buy a replacement because it would be costly to repair. As many comments have said, the freezer works great, this combo looks nice, but the product should last longer than 3 years. There is a known issue with these Whirlpool sidekicks but Whirlpool will do nothing to fix their future line, because these issues are been ongoing for the past decade. If Whirlpool updates these models then you are stuck having to buy both the fridge and freezer so that they match. Very disappointed as many customers are with this product.

In 3 years of having this house with this refrigerator we have been through 2 and came home to it out again and lost everything in the refrigerator! Call customer service and told 3 different things 3 different times and after getting a repair man out was told when the second one was put in they tore a bunch of stuff up along with my floor and left the appliance out enough to cover the tear! When the service man called to inform whirlpool was told by a supervisor to have me call he would make sure I was taken care of! I called and gave the file number spoke to autumn and she was so rude and hateful and basically told me that there was nothing she could do and that I was welcome to call the company that installed it myself. I mean really this is a company you sent to my home not someone I found! And not to mention hello I have no refrigerator working! And also told I would have to pull it out myself for the company to work on! I'm a women how the heck am I suppose to do that? This is the worst product I have ever owned and the worst customer service I have ever dealt with!!! Wouldn't ever recommend whirlpool to anyone and I will let everyone I know be aware of how I was treated and what I have been through with this product and the so called customer service experience!!!!

I waited 5 weeks to get this, finally arrived got it home to find the door wouldn't close without pushing it shut. Whirlpool company was great to deal with they sent a tech out to fix and to my disappointment they said the unit had been dropped nothing they could do to fix it. The company I ordered it through has did nothing to resolve the issue . I guess I spent a lot of money on a great looking unit that doesn't function because of an accident during their shipping process.

Like several of the other reviews, mine stopped cooling this week. About 2 1/2 years old. Going to cost almost as much to fix as a new one costs. We built the cabinets to fit the matching sidekicks pair so I'm limited on options. I might buy a new one at a store that offers an extended warranty. Ridiculous that a $1500 refrigerator would not last 3 years. Sounds like this is a common problem Whirlpool should stand behind and definitely find a way to fix.

When I was shopping for a new fridge, the idea of a freezer-less fridge was such a scary prospect, I almost walked away. Fortunately, the salesman asked me all the right questions and then pointed out that I was gaining way more fridge space than losing convenience (we have a full stand-alone freezer in the basement) -- and it was a more economical option. I am so glad we did buy it. I love having a huge refrigerator space in the kitchen -- and actually think we are eating better because we can store so many more fresh fruits and veggies!

We purchased this model in May 2015. We returned home from holiday last week, the refrigerator was not cooling. Called Whirlpool for a service call which was quickly arranged. After todays service call we learn that the refrigerator has no refrigerant and is NOT repairable. Very disappointed in the short life of such an expensive appliance.

This fridge is 3 years old, manufactured in 2016, compressor just went, $850 replacement compressor, no warranty on the part, absolute garbage. Had to wait 2 days for a service tech and $129 bill to tell me the compressor was gone and would be better off putting the money towards a new fridge. $2000 fridge lasted for less then 3 years, will never buy whirlpool again and will ensure I tell everyone I know to purchase other brands. I understand things break, but to not stand behind your product for a reasonable amount of time says volumes about what kind of product is being manufactured

Don't buy this refrigerator. Our 17 mo old sidekick just went out. The certified appliance repair company told us it is not fixable. The Freon leaked out and the compressor is failing. We paid 1400.00 for this on August 11 of 2017. It was delivered and installed in September of 2017. We designed our kitchen for this large refrigerator and separate freezer and like the idea of the capacity and the salesman's pitch about having separate compressors for each unit. We had a previous sidekick that lasted about 7 or 8 years but did have some problems with the drain not working within the first few years. At least it kept things cool. The fan failed on the freezer twice. Because the space was designed for the dimensions of the sidekicks, we made the mistake of buying them again.

This replaces a Kenmore fridge I had for only 3 years. So far this Whirlpool fridge is so much better. It boasts individual drawers for produce with humidity control. It also will make a sound to alarm you if the temperature is getting too warm...I hope to never have that used. Every bit of the inside is designed to be utilized. I'm very pleased

I bought replacement sidekicks in my new house because the original ones were leaking coolant and not working properly. They were only 6 years old, seems a bit early to be unrepairable. My complaint is that the doors are way thicker (2" thicker) than the last models and it meant pulling the appliances out of their alcove in order to let the doors open properly. This changes the kitchen layout; I liked it better when these appliances could completely sit back in their alcove.

After 7 month the fridge stop cooling, we lost all the food in the fridge with no compensation. We called customer service and they offer us to BUY and extended warranty....The whirlpool repairman finally came after 2 week, he did some repair and he told us that it will be cool in about 2 hours, that did not happen...so we are still out of fridge and lost another groceries
Bad fridge and even worst service....DONT BUY THESE

We designed our kitchen around the Whirlpool Sidekicks. Our first set lasted 14 years! The fridge finally needed to be replaced and the freezer is now in the garage. We love this product. It is a great looking appliance and an ideal alternative to the over priced options that are out there.

I bought this fridge in November but didn't receive until December. Had it almost a month and I love it. The only thing, it could use a meat container but I just use one of the crisper sections, there are four. Also, it took me a bit to figure out what to do with the bottom section of the door as it is not wise enough for normal bottles etc. Ta da! It works well for salad dressings, which not even the sales person suggested to me. Could also be fingerprint resistant which it is not but that's not a big issue.

Bought these in 2014 and after 4 years of use the refrigerator stopped cooling. Ofcourse these were part of my house build and my cabinets are built around them so I was forced to purchase a new fridge due to the terrible 1 year warranty and now the new fridge is redesigned and it does not match the freezer.

Bought the fridge and matching freezer when we remodeled the kitchen. Both units have had nothing but problems. The fridge quit getting cold so had the service tech check it out. Of course the warranty was expired so we had to pay for the parts and labor. Four months later it stops cooling again and after 5 weeks at the appliance store troubleshooting it another leak is found and fixed now again another four months and yep not cooling again. So being told they want to replace the evaporator for $350 more in labor and service. I will now have to spend about what I paid for the fridge new to keep it working. So three service calls in less than a year on a unit that is just over 3 years in service. This is unacceptable and Whirlpool should be embarrassed with the lemon this product has turned out to be. According to the other 37 one star rating reviews this is a common issue and needs to be addressed by whirlpool.

I bought this 2 years ago and it has had tons of problems with noisy compressor and cooling alert always going on.
Latest is it wont cool. Just paid $98 to Flamingo Appliance Service telling me it will be $600 to replace the evaporator and drier. They spent 10 minutes of work to tell me that. they don't have the parts today and now I have to take off another day of work next week, if they can find the parts. What is worse, is they even say no one at Whirpool answers the phone to get parts. which is true. Since i just tried 8 times and kept getting a message to call back. same with chat. cuts me off on chat line too. so disappointing on so many levels with Whirlpool.
